IVF in Israel
Most people, upon hearing that they require a medical procedure, seek out the best practitioner that their money can buy; and for obvious reason. When your health is at stake, there is no room for compromise as there are some things that are simply irreplaceable; and your life is one of them. There are some things almost as irreplaceable as your own life. For many people that includes the life of their own child that they have not had the privilege of holding, kissing, and cuddling.
Call it fate, nature, God – it doesn’t matter what you call it but when events have transpired so that a couple cannot bring their own child, there is almost nothing that couple won’t do to fill that very human need. And anyone with a child can fully understand their consternation.
Thankfully, in the instance of women unable to conceive, the hubris of man to play God has borne fruit and turned the life of many a couple into that of a family.
Man Made Miracles
In vitro fertilization (IVF) comes from the Latin for “in glass” as many of the experiments in this field were performed in glass laboratory containers. It is a process whereby the fertilization with sperm of a woman’s eggs (ovum or ova) is performed outside her body. Once the egg is fertilized, the zygote is transferred to the woman’s uterus in the hope that a viable pregnancy will be established.
The first successful IVF procedure occurred in 1978 when a “test tube baby “was born. The physiologist who developed this process, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 32 years after his breakthrough.
Thankfully the wheels of science turn quicker than those of the Nobel Foundation and IVF treatment has evolved together with advances in science and medicine over the past three and a half decades to the extent where families in virtually every country of the world have been blessed with children due to this process.
And so we return to the pressing question for those seeking the best in IVF treatment – where can I receive the best IVF treatment with the highest probability of success, and isit within my financial means?
Israel as the IVF Capital of the World
Israel has made a name for itself as the go-to destination for those seeking the best in IVF treatment. It is almost counterintuitive to expect a tiny country comprised of 6.5 million Jews to be the world leader in this field, but you would be hard pressed to overlook Israel if seeking IVF treatment. Let’s explore some of the reasons for this apparent anomaly.
Part of the reason for Israel’s leadership position has already been touched upon – Israel as the Jewish homeland. Jews are known as the People of the Book in reference to their reverence for the Old Testament. The first commandment in the Old Testament is to ”go forth and multiply.” This commandment is taken very seriously by the Jews who will do almost anything to fulfill it.
With minimal separation between “church” and state in Israel, this commandment is endorsed and facilitated by the state. Every woman under the age of 45, irrespective of religion, marital status, or sexual orientation is subsidized by the state to have two children via IVF irrespective of the number of procedures, required. This has resulted in Israeli doctors building up enormous expertise in this field.
Practice Makes Perfect
Due to this government policy, which comes at great cost to the state, Israel has the highest per capita IVF rate in the world, with 4% of Israeli children born via IVF as of 2010.
As is the case with most things in life, practice makes perfect. This is also true of medical procedures and Israeli doctors have had the opportunity to perform more IVF procedures and encounter different variations of problems in conceiving – and overcome them, then doctors in any other country.
Israeli expertise in IVF is available to anyone from around the world on a private basis. The cost is approximately 25-30% of similar procedures in the U.S. and you are receiving the best treatment that money can buy.
IVF treatment in Israel is not only Israel’s gift to Israeli families but also Israel’s gift to the world.
